Over the past 30 years, a center of Tibetan culture has been taking shape on an 80-acre wooded site amidst the rolling hills of Southern Indiana near I.U. Bloomington. This dream to preserve and introduce Tibetan Buddhist spirituality and culture to the West has been in no small part due to the tireless efforts, dedication, and inspired vision of the late Professor Thubten Jigme Norbu (Tagtser Rinpoche), the elder brother of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Dr. Norbu migrated to the U.S. in 1950 and later settled in Bloomington, Indiana.

The Tibetan Cultural Center in Bloomington, re-named The Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center (TMBCC) in 2006 by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) who has visited Indiana five times since 1987. Dalai Lama is the Spiritual Leader of the Tibetan Buddhism and is the former Ruler of Tibet who has been living in exile in India since 1959 when he fled his Homeland in the face of Chinese invasion and occupation of his country. While the world has looked the other way, the brutal suppression of Tibetan people in their Homeland and destruction of their ancient culture has continued to this day.

The Dalai Lama, venerated by his followers as a god-king and Buddha of Compassion; by many world leaders, as a celebrated Man of Peace, humanitarian, and wise spiritual leader; and by countless millions of every faith tradition, admired as a brilliant Spiritual Light and noble Enlightened Teacher of our times. In deep humility and unbound grace, with a disarming innocence and hearty laughter, Dalai Lama introduces himself as just an ordinary Monk.

Today, the TMBCC has several buildings on the site. Past the colorfully ornate entrance Gate dedicated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2007, the meandering gravel road takes us to the Tibetan Cultural Center, a beautifully decorated facility with rooms for gatherings, displays, banquets, library, office and gift shop; commemorative Changchub and Kalachakara Chortens (Stupas), and The Chamtse Ling (Field of Compassion) Temple, dedicated by Dalai Lama in September 2003 with an Interfaith Prayer Service and renamed The Kumbum Chamtse Ling Monastery after the Kumbum Monastery in occupied Tibet. There are the traditional fluttering prayer-flags strung across outdoor meeting spaces, colorful Mongolian tents, log cabins placed amidst the natural landscape; and several large cleared areas for gatherings, fairs, and religious events and festive ceremonies. Great care is taken to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of this emerging campus, envisioned as a major center for learning and culture, meditation and contemplation, interfaith feasts and festivals, and peace and friendship among all people.

The TMBCC grounds are a sanctuary of bliss for everyone who comes in peace, whether they are a Buddhist pilgrims or seekers of spiritual wisdom; scholars, students, members of the media engaged in comparative studies of faith traditions or report on a special event; or simply casual visitors from Indiana, around the U.S.A., or abroad. A friendly welcome greets each visitor. An unusual stillness and serenity pervade the grounds, steadies the mind, invites the soul to witness an all-embracing spirit that seem to gently descend into the innermost realm of our being.

Tibetan spiritual wisdom in exquisite gold calligraphy, gilded statues of Buddha, colorful Mandalas and religious artworks, brocaded ceremonial hangings and covers in brilliant colors, display of donated sacred articles of Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Native Americans, Sikh, Jewish, Bahai, Society of Friends, Unitarian Universalist faith traditions adorn two columns in the center of the sanctuary space of The Chamtse Ling Temple. Other structures and visual attractions on the TMBCC campus, their designs and treatments inspired by traditional Buddhist architecture in the South East Asia, have similar decorations and adornments on their walls and ceilings.

Each visual element, natural or a fashioned representation, throughout the sacred complex draws our mind and sight to the rich traditions of Tibetan Buddhist faith, to Tibetan history, heritage, the spirit of an ancient and magnificent people and their unique culture. Upon reflection, it sets our mind and thoughts on a journey to times and places that until recently we had only casually known, never personally visited, but today grace and enrich the spiritual and cultural fabric of America. To think that this ancient heritage is now an integral part of our young and expanding national cultural tapestry is both significant and remarkable. We see echoes of our own spirituality, cultural connections, and our shared humanity at many levels, at new frontiers and unimagined crossroads where advancements in our civilization have placed us today.

For me, each such adventure outside my comfort box, every new pilgrimage of my spirit into the unfamiliar stirs up fresh emotions and reflections, images and imaginations, deep appreciation and reverence for those who, with great passion and visions, embarked on daring journeys in response to events that have shaped their and our civilization through the ages. I marvel at the universal human desire and efforts to create a sense of belonging, a place to call home for our spirit, culture, and innermost stirrings. The TMBCC, Sikh Temples, Synagogues, ethnic anchors and markers, religious schools, festive celebrations are our response to that innate human urge.

During a visit to The TMBCC on the Memorial Day weekend to participate in a Tibetan Mongolian Festival, the welcome sounds of Buddhist chants and prayers by the Monks, the birds singing their songs of Praise, prayer-flags fluttering in the late morning wind, the inspiring reflections offered by learned and honored guests, all filled the space with a transforming energy. The scene and spirit captured my mind. Before me, I saw a warm spirit of friendship radiate from each guest present for the festivities of the day; below me, I saw a beautiful patch of Mother Earth in all its majestic grace and incredible bounty; above me, I saw a blue Sky-Canopy stretched across unfathomable heavens teaming with millions of galaxies, each studded with billions of stars. We were witnessing our unifying faith lessons: reminded of being all a part of One unfathomable Creation and Divine Mystery; children of One Father and Mother of All Creation and members of One Human Family. With compassion as our common universal anchor, we are all mandated to honor these Truths and remember that a person of faith does not see others as strangers, aliens, or unworthy of our respect and thoughtful consideration.

Today, TMBCC is an international pilgrimage site in the Midwest and a major addition to the spiritual and cultural landscape of Indiana. The spiritually-rich and welcome spirit of this place is being exemplified and tirelessly nurtured by Venerable Arjia Rinpoche, a special emissary of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who serves as Spiritual leader and President-Director of the TMBCC. A planned major Learning Institute in ancient and traditional Tibetan studies will further add to the importance of The Kumbum Monastery (West).

The daily prayers and teachings by resident Monks, various cultural and spiritual events and attractions organized by the Center staff and followers, and faith and spirit of thousands who come in peace and leave a little of their spiritual imprints behind in this hallowed ground during their pilgrimage to this place, all contribute to the spiritually-inviting nature of the area.

On this recent occasion, Mr. Gonchig Ganbold, Counsel General of Mongolia from Washington D.C., I.U. Vice President, Dr. Patrick O’Meara, and many others joined Venerable Arjia Rinpoche to celebrate Tibetan and Mongolian Culture through prayers and poetry, songs and dances, fun and feasting, cultural displays and prized gifts, service awards and recognitions, and fellowship and friendship. I felt blessed to be a part of the festivities and memorable experience.

CELEBRATING THE ASIAN PRESENCE

The last five decades have seen an unprecedented influx of people from around the world and a large number of them from countries in the vast Asian Continent that today houses nearly half of the world’s population of over six billion people and two emerging superpowers, China and India, into the United States of America. We have witnessed a significant share of these Asian immigrants converging into the American Heartland in search of their dreams and opportunities. These immigrants represent many unique talents, rich cultural heritage and, a strong will to strive and excel in lands and places that are their new home.

These newcomers, until recently, remained unusually quiet; the full measure of their talents untapped. They are finally coming into the community mainstream and national spotlight as a population, exploring the power and potential of their ideas, passions, and proudly affirming their deep commitment to American ideals. At the same time, these recent arrivals to our shores remain excited about the deeply enshrined cultural associations and ancient traditions of their native lands, and are passionately engaged in creating private, public, and cross-cultural activities, opportunities, and environment for their preservation and continuation to benefit the future generations of Americans. Cities are promoting diversity as an attraction, a destination. Media, internet, and inter-continental travel is frequently spotlighting and introducing us to Asia as a Continent of incredible richness, diversity, and wonderful surprises.

The 2008 estimates put the number of Asian Americans in the U.S. at around 15.0 million, or roughly 5.0% of the U.S. population of just over three hundred million. Estimates place the largest numbers of Asians in the U.S. today at: Chinese (3.6 million), Filipinos (2.9 million), Indians (2.7 million), Koreans (1.5 million), Japanese (1.2 millions), and many other nationalities in smaller numbers. The Asian Americans in the U.S. represent many ethnicities, cultural groups, and faith traditions: Buddhists (3.0 million) Hindus (over 2.0 million), Sikhs (around 1.0 million), Baha’is, (160,000), Jains, Zoroastrians, and others. When one considers that there are Christians of many denominations (over 250 million), Jews (over 6.0 million), Muslims (over 5.0 million), diverse Native American, African, and followers of many other spiritual traditions, we can safely say that this makes the American spiritual landscape and cultural tapestry as one of the richest and most diverse in the world.

ASIAN AMERICANS IN INDIANA
The Asian American population in Indiana has seen much growth during the last half a century. Today, some estimates put the Indiana’s Asian American population at near 100,000, or roughly 1.6% of the total State population of around 6.4 million. In Indianapolis, the Asian Indian population has grown from a few families in the 1960’s to nearly 7,000 families today. The Sikh American population increased from one or two to nearly 2,500 families in the same period. The largest concentrations of Asian Americans located in the Indianapolis Metropolitan area are: Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, Koreans, Japanese, Vietnamese, Tibetans, Chins, and over 25 other Asian nationalities.

Their numbers in Indiana tell only a part of their story, especially when one dispassionately visits their contributions to our cultural assets, educational and research fields, science and technology, business and service sector, media and the arts, and our growing international image. The Asian ideas, cultural orientation, and work ethic often keep Asian Americans as an invisible and often ignored population and may have hindered the advancement of some of the best and brightest to the positions and rewards that they truly deserve. This has prompted the Asian American leaders to actively engage in shaking this image of being a quiet community and encouraging their members to mainstream their talents, energies, investments, culture, passions and commitments, and proudly participate in every walk of life, exciting service projects, and significant happenings in the communities where they live and work.

As a direct outcome of such effort and encouragement, Asian Americans are present at many community events, most recently at the annual Diversity Luncheon where the Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard honored several businesses that support, promote, and advance diversity in the City and at Governor Mitch Daniels’ Inauguration Ceremony at the historic Indiana State House.

ASIAN ETHNIC ORGANIZATIONS AND CULTURAL GROUPS
The idea of re-creating the intimate spirit and familiar images from the countries of their origin began in earnest as soon as the Asians arrived in Indiana. Today, there are dozens of organizations and cultural groups, ethnic restaurants, places of worship, festivals and ceremonies that serve Asian Americans and they proudly share their culture with the entire population. To name a few: The India Association of Indianapolis (since 1970; www.myiai.org) celebrates Diwali, the Indian Festival of Light; The Sikh Education and Cultural Society (since early ‘70’s; www.indianapolisgurdwara.org) celebrates Baisakhi, the famous Festival of Harvest in Punjab.

The International Center of Indianapolis (founded in 1972; www.icenterindy.org) promotes international interests and honors an International Citizen each year; The Indiana Nationalities Council (originally created as an advisory group to the International Center of Indianapolis in 1973; www.nationalitiescouncil.org) organizes the annual International Festival, attended by 25,000 people; The Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Bloomington, Indiana has become a major spiritual center due to the frequent visits of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The First MultiEthnic Indiana Conference, sponsored by the Office of Indiana Governor (2008; www.Indianamultiethnic.org), spotlighted the ethnic immigrants in Indiana.

The Asian American Alliance (founded 1999; www.AAAlliance.org), with the express aim of promoting, advocating, and advancing Asian American interests, sponsors its annual signature events: The Race For All Races, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and The Asian Festival to interface with their friends from many Asian countries and central Indiana community and raise funds for minority scholarships. In addition, there are a number of schools, colleges, churches; civic, business, workplace-based clubs and private associations that offer dance and music instructions and competitions; ethnic celebrations by local and professionals, and performances by world-class talents in every major city in America. Each such initiative in its own way is acknowledging and promoting the Asian American presence in our midst and greatly enhances our own awareness of our diverse and wonderful ethnic inheritance.

It was a truly pleasant surprise to attend the Chinese New Year Celebration, The Year of the Ox, this weekend at The Clowes Memorial Hall on the Butler University Campus in Indianapolis, sponsored by The Eli Lilly Chinese Culture Network (www.indy-chinese.com). It was amazing to see the large gathering of Chinese Americans and their guests from many nationalities. All had come to celebrate the Chinese New Year and enjoy the great talents, pride, and bursting energy of the performers and organizers. The evening was a riot of color, festivity, and pleasant surprise. It was a symphonic orchestration of dance, music, drama, and spirit of an ancient culture. It was joyous and uplifting; timeless ancient richness and rituals had transcended into our cultural space and presented to us centuries and miles away from their origin; transporting our spirit to another time and advanced civilization; and dispelling unfounded stereotype and stimulating and inviting our minds and senses to learn more about each other.

A PERSONAL REFLECTION
As I sat through over three hours of beautiful dances, music, and cultural insights, I was struck by a joyful feeling of how far the dream of visualizing Indianapolis as a cosmopolitan cultural crossroads and welcome destination for people from around the world has come over the past 41 years since my decision to make Indianapolis as my home. Today, it is easy to imagine the history, heritage, and rich traditions that were once thousands of miles and certainly unfamiliar to most in the audience now receive a thunderous applause and find cultural resonance in the minds and spirit of all who come to attend these celebrations. It was a transcendent moment when the distant had become near and the unfamiliar something personal and cherished.

Yet we know that as Asian Americans, much like the ethnic and nationality groups before us, have a long emotional and cultural distance to travel to be fully integrated into American society and enjoy the fullest blessings of their opportunities and responsibilities. All such events: The Asian Festival, The Race for All Races, The Chinese New Year, The International Festival, Diwali, Baisakhi, and a myriad of colorful celebrations, religious festivals, interfaith gatherings, and exchange forums are important classrooms to learn about and from each other. They help us understand and expand our rightful place as a community within the mosaic of societal framework and peacefully engage in the pursuits of our dreams, creative urges, and happiness; our happiness being a key to unleashing multiple dimensions of our human potential. These celebrations affirm a basic right to express and nurture our deeply personal and inherent need to stay connected to our cultural anchors, spiritual heritage, and create opportunities to share our gifts, passions, and concerns with one another to build new bridges and walk towards each other in friendship and mutual respect as an affirmation of our shared humanity.

The spirit of excitement that radiates at these Asian American festive celebrations reinforces an all-important trust that there is no conflict in preserving the cultural and deeply personal facets of our being that make us who we are and our contributions to the American society in many ways and at many levels. Asians, much like others groups, offer many new language skills, fascinating arts, innovative ideas, family values and work ethic, experiences and approaches to solving our common problems, enhance our spiritual attractions, unique qualifications to serve as goodwill ambassadors to initiate trade, exchange, collaborative ventures, and create marketplaces for American ideas, products, and services to the countries of their origin. The recognition that all citizens and good ideas matter has been gradually evolving into a major cornerstone of our national and community policies and framework and is greatly enhancing our ability to excel in an intensely competitive global environment.

Our growing diversity, in its colorful splendor, creative and fascinating facets, is our new great frontier of opportunity before us. We must celebrate the presence, gifts, dreams, and spirit that each citizen brings to new lands and communities. As Asian Americans, we need to be partners in opening new doors, fully engage in realizing, enhancing, and advancing our individual promise, and put our assets to good use for our Nation to compete with other nations in this brave new interdependent global village that we share as a human family. The beautiful, diverse, and dynamic composite that is Asian American, must identify, introduce, and network our common and collective interests and struggles with other communities, cross the formidable thresholds yet awaiting to become a significant population within the one indivisible nation, and embrace and advance a united solemn spirit to further multiply the blessings of all Americans.

We know that, in the United States of America, unimagined dreams are possible. We must remember that dreams do not come to us; we have to imagine striving and trailblazing to fulfill our cherished dreams. The spirit of adventure has brought us here and we have come a long way over the last half a century. That makes our landmark celebrations and commemorations a true catalyst for greater friendly exchange. We are thrilled to witness this evolving renaissance of confidence and newly found vitality on the part of Asian Americans as a major triumph.

The 2008 Spirit & Place Festival theme: “Exploring Imagination” is truly thought provoking. As I see it, the theme invites and celebrates our efforts and resolve in transforming ordinary and extraordinary, imagined and perceived ideas, and cherished hopes and dreams into visions of reality.

First, we must define and understand imagination, its significance, and important place in human affairs. It is in exploring that we set forth new markers in human advancement and test the power and limits of our imagination, skills, experience, and great ideas. Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, a former President of India, reminds us, “ideas move the world, and thought precedes action.” Someone else made another brilliant call: “great ideas are wonderful but something has to be done about them.”

SEEING IMAGINATION AS A LIVING PRISM

As living-breathing and thinking beings, we carry special hopes, dreams, and expectations that best reflect our times, interests, talents, and commitments to improve our personal and collective human condition. We wonder, examine, and interpret the meaning, intricate mysteries and interrelationships, and the boundless promise of life. We see life as a colorful and complex tapestry of thoughts, emotions, ideas, and raw images of dreams and possibilities. We see life as a many-faceted living prism, teeming with and unfolding many ideas and images that dazzle our mind and attention. Our study, meditations, and reflections inspire us to give shape to ideas that capture our imagination.

In this journey, culture, creativity, time and circumstances, and unexpected challenges daily interface with elements of our complex universe, constantly stretching our imagination from mundane to the unfathomable reaches of our spirit and humanity, connecting us at many unimagined crossroads, and leaping across others along the way. Our imagination is an unmistakable call and adventure into our “can do better” spirit, leading us on a tireless search to further ideas that may make a difference to our individual and shared worlds, not just for ourselves but also for generations that follow, and finding the best answers and directions to the critical concerns and opportunities of our times.

Man instinctively knows that great ideas are critical to enhancing human promise. Imagination is our passport that leads us to discovery of new fascinating possibilities and destinations; a uniquely-human attribute and emotion that charges our senses to plunge into the uncharted regions and realms to satisfy human curiosity, fulfill some urgent need, or simply to indulge in a daring rendezvous to test the nature and character of our fascination. Imagination is about carrying an intuitive understanding that impossible it may be, but impossible it is not when we set our spirit on fire in our pursuits.

CULTIVATING THE POWER OF IMAGINATION

Our ability to dream big, imagine in living color, and think in grand terms; our passion to overcome past limitations and boundaries; human ingenuity and innovation to fulfill cherished ambitions and awesome fantasies; and deep urge to unravel the great mysteries of life are the among the greatest gift from the Divine. Imagination represents a powerful live-force that adds an intriguing and motivational dimension to human happiness, prosperity and advancement, since it forms the intellectual, emotional, and creative framework to our ideas and visions. Imagination translates the human fascination with adventure into acts and expressions of greatness, constantly revealing and expanding the already myriad dimensions of the universe that surrounds us, and inspiring our stake and rightful place in this mysterious puzzle and drama that gives definition and character to our ideas and civilization.

Human imagination is an awesome adventure not just of the mind and sight but also of our spirit and humanity, taking us into realms far beyond the easy and familiar into areas that on first thought may seem impossible and a formidable climb. Given the time, energy, right preparations and investments, surprising results may shatter thresholds that often hold us back. No task is too great for the spirit, since it originates deep within our soul and carries an innate knowledge that the untried and unrealized frontiers and thresholds of yesterday can be the new reality of tomorrow under the right circumstances and directions. Mr. Fauja Singh, the 98-year old distinguished Sikh marathoner form U.K., reminds us: “Impossible is Nothing.” We all admire the American icon, Dr. Helen Keller, an awe-inspiring and shining example of triumph over her struggle against incredible odds, and the power of imagination, exemplary determination, and uncommon courage of her teacher that made the unlocking of Helen’s spirit and brilliance a reassuring lasting testimony for all humanity.

FREEDOM OF THOUGHT AND SPIRIT

Freedom of thought and spirit are essential for human imagination to flourish, for new discoveries to take place, for human civilization to make forward leaps. Each of us has that power to make great things happen, to attempt and harness the uncommon and unimagined. Pursuit of great ideas has led us to intercontinental travel, exploration of space, landing on the moon and a glimpse of the heavens teaming with billions of stars and galaxies; incredible scientific, industrial-technological, and medical advancements; exploding internet, information, and telecommunication revolution; achievements in the arts, architecture, and engineering; and countless humanitarian global initiatives to solve human problems. It all begins with someone sensing a need and dreaming up an idea; someone defining the challenge, stepping forward with a sound plan and assembling critical talents; and someone daring to face the unknowns, go against the unfriendly winds, and bring about the celebrated outcomes.

INTERFACING IMAGINED WITH DETERMINED STRIVING

Pursuing new dreams and distinctions and finding answers to human yearnings has been a primordial second nature to man. As a civilization we would not be where we are today without our pioneering spirit in search of new thresholds and dreams. To set new markers along the human journey, we have called upon the best of the human will and willingness, often an entire village with new and ancient wisdoms working together, deep faith and sustained passions, and a whole lot of inner strength to defy the odds. In time, our persistence has prevailed, unlocking our alternatives and successful answers.

Each such event is simply another beginning for the conquest of our next formidable challenge. With a fertile imagination, with eyes on the prize, man has embarked upon the conquest of the unreachable from the beginning of time. Led by this passion, man has set his sights on the hardest and highest, the mysterious and dangerous, and by refusing to surrender has opened up, conquered new frontiers and proudly trail-blazed into some truly memorable and spectacular triumphs of the human spirit.

SEEING LIGHT BEYOND THE DARKNESS

Even in the midst of intense darkness and devastating experiences, our imagination has offered us a lifeline to ride out the uncertain prospects and our temporary defeats. In the midst of our brightest moments, our imagination has called upon us to go higher and farther where we have never been before. Our imagination, with its constant dance of images, awaiting possibilities and dazzling testimony of others before us, has served as a brilliant teacher and motivator beckoning us to yet unexplored brave new worlds. Time, innovation, determination, and patience alone have certified the reality and prospects of success beyond the frequent setbacks experienced along the journey.

For us, just imagining, achieving wonderful dreams or significant breakthroughs is not enough. Man’s true calling is seeking answers to tough problems, resolving conflicts, uplifting human spirit and condition, pursuit of happiness, and going beyond the mandate of his endeavors and imagination of the moment. Imagination is never static; our urge to explore is inherently natural and intensely personal. In life, we will all have our share of struggles, interrupted dreams, unexpected failures, and unjust and unfair rewards of our efforts. We need to look past the moment for new signs, always remembering that, in time, our tireless striving will lead us through new gateways and preordained outcomes.

SIGNS AND TESTIMONY OF INSPIRATIONS

Scriptures proclaim that God places all ideas and thoughts in our mind, hoping that we are listening and make His planned lessons for us a reality. Faith testimonials affirm that God often guides our efforts and prayers to conquer the impossible and overcome the unimagined. As a Benevolent Presence, God blesses us a kindred network – parents, teachers, friends, strangers arriving as angels, faith, hope, resilience, and unexplained miracles to carry out His Will. We need to listen to our inner commands and take courageous steps forward to our appointment with destiny. Suddenly we may see in front of us, not anything that we have achieved but a testimony of higher trust, generosity, love, and moments of Grace personified. We may witness that many hearts and angelic spirits pray for us, lead us across the thresholds of uncertainty and impossible, and rejoice in our triumphs and achievements.

TRIBUTE TO LIFE AND THE DIVINE: A PERSONAL FOOTNOTE

Such thoughts and lessons keep me grounded and grateful, serve as an anchor in my journey, and fill my spirit with renewed faith and creative passion. Each of us have our own inner sanctum from where we draw our strength, let our spirit embark on journeys and renaissance to make our ever-changing human universe a better place in which we may all dwell and prosper in peace and happiness. We need to learn about each other; the manifestations of culture, freedoms, and opportunity that surround us. Exploring our uncommon common connections, making timely investments to accomplish big visions, trailblazing uncharted spaces and interests with the best and brightest ideas, with initiatives and intentions that celebrate and honor our shared and sacred humanity above all else, and putting our entrusted gifts and spirit to greater good are all amazingly liberating, our gift to Life and the Divine.

LEARNING AND CELEBRATION OF SPIRIT AND PLACE

It all begins by open and imaginative community conversations, programs, and performances where we stretch our hands across the real or unfounded fences, explore ideas, weigh divergent responses, and answers to our common visions. The Festival places the arts, cultures, matters of spirit and our faiths as universal anchors and civic language at community crossroads. The Partners showcase their unique and colorful gifts. The Participants listen and learn with their heart, and in faith, about the rich diversity that surrounds us, and the need to dispel ignorance, prejudice, and unfounded stereotype. Together we strengthen community interrelationships to maximize our collective future promise.

With expanding audiences, interest, and momentum, the Spirit & Place Festival offers carefully selected programs based on a fascinating theme (‘01: Crossing Boundaries; ‘02: Building & Belonging; ‘07: Living Generously) that advances understanding across traditional attitudes and unfamiliarities. Each group is required to work with and embrace new Festival partners with the hope of making new friends, building new bridges, teaching and learning, and brightening the cultural and spiritual landscape of our City. Over the last ten years, the Hoosier Sikhs have collaborated with The Tibetan Buddhist, Methodist, Jewish, Unitarian Universalist, and The Asian American Alliance as Festival Partners, in a proud affirmation of the spirit and noble mission of this unique Festival.

The Spirit & Place Festival is sponsored and coordinated by The Polis Center of Indiana University. For details of The 2008 Festival, visit: www.spiritandplace.org

We see God as an Immaculate Reality, Eternal Truth as something of an omnipresence that carries a halo of awe, mystery, and unimagined power that is beyond description, measure, and dimensions as we know or understand them. This inherent knowledge, divinely-inspired memory and passion seeking a spiritual connection with the Spirit within and all around, has been part of human yearning and prayer from the earliest beginnings of time and life. Our search for this Eternal Truth, affirmed by much testimony and evidence throughout the history of human civilization, has introduced us to many spiritual philosophies, interpretations, and revelations. Much like the ever-expanding, unfathomable universe, human spirituality has an aura of awesome mystery, growing fascination for all living beings, and continuous evolution and illumination. Different faiths seem to affirm similar images and understanding about the Supreme Nature and Spirit of the Divine and yet offer new Light and distinct perspectives.

FINDING NEW CONNECTIONS AT SPIRITUAL CROSSROADS

It is in learning and sharing our faith highlights: philosophy, commandments, traditions, history, culture, and practice with others that we discover many common ideas about matters of spirit that thread through diverse faiths and sacred traditions.

We see similar temporal concerns and preoccupation with the realm of the Divine. We see amazing, familiar, and defining echoes and images reflected in other faiths: in faith traditions, revelations, spiritual doctrines, sacred texts, ceremonies, and prayer. We see some elements of unity that form the foundation of major faiths and sacred traditions: concept of Higher Being, human struggle, power of prayer, and ultimate spiritual- destinations.

We see affirmations of God’s Power, Majesty, and Magnificence; the unfathomable nature of His Creation; and reminders of God’s unbound benevolence towards all Creation as a loving and compassionate Father, Mother, and mighty King. We see Hope, Faith, Love, and Service as commandments for human conduct; living our faith in service to others as our personal commitment and offering to God.

We see life as wonder, mystery, anticipation, uncertainty, creativity, celebration, and as the scriptures remind us, our precious opportunity to know and serve God, to be reunited with Him eternally in the Hereafter.

INTERFACING OUR COLLECTIVE SPIRITUAL INHERITANCE

Our interfaith gatherings bring home some of these common Truths and Revelations. At the interfaith gatherings, we witness a rich spectrum of our spiritual wisdom and sacred expressions. We reaffirm and briefly relive the beautiful spiritual tapestry that seems stretched across human universe by The Creator Himself. In the diverse and distinct prayers, chants, music, worship practices, we experience hope, love, and God’s promise without distinction or a sense of separateness. Even as we are reminded of the many paths to achieve the fullness of life in the here and the Hereafter, we feel connected in a circle of friendliness and our common humanity. We see lessons in profound wisdom, and we proudly honor the sanctity of each faith and sacred tradition. In so doing we honor God from whom all gifts flow, including the gift of life, liberty, and spirituality.

I marvel at the scriptural readings, sacred chants, and musical renditions on such occasions. My mind travels, recalls and unravels similar passages, ideas and illustrations enshrined in other sacred texts. For me, this realization is not just a coincidence or a case of borrowed inspiration. It is a strong and unmistakable affirmation that there is One Central Source of all Knowledge, for all faiths. Much like a Beloved Parent and Teacher, God often repeats the same lessons in other settings at other times in His tireless and benevolent effort to keep us on a path of peace, unity, and to honor our shared humanity. Our inter-faith is just that: entering into faith with one another as One God’s Children and discovering our many common hopes, dreams, and individual and collective promise; knowing, learning, celebrating, and strengthening our own embraced faith traditions; and seeing our many faiths as the beautiful panels of our magnificent spiritual tapestry.

Participating in several Interfaith Prayer Services in recent months was a special privilege to witness this Truth. Seeing the CBS documentary: “IN GOD’S NAME” over the Holiday Season was an enlightening and moving experience. The documentary spotlighted 12 spiritual leaders from major faith traditions who offered us some insights into their faiths and personal lives. They shared common wisdom that weaves through the colorful fabric of faiths; discussed overarching ideas, lessons, and sacred traditions that form the intricate mosaic of faiths that intrigues and inspires five billion souls across the human universe. They reminded us of our responsibility, moral accountability, and urgent need to recognize that we have the power to bridge our self-created divides. Offer each other light instead of darkness; hope instead of indifference, renewed trust instead of continued distrust; and friendship and unconditional respect instead of unwelcome ignorance and intolerance if we are serious about our mutual survival as a civilization and shaping a more peaceful and hopeful world for ourselves and future generations.

CLASS XXXII DIVERSITY DAY
The Indianapolis Urban League
December 13, 2007

Kanwal Prakash “KP” Singh
(Notes, Comments, Reflections)

BY LAND, BY SEA, BY AIR, BY INTERNET
The human universe is in an unprecedented flux. People, cultures, ideas, talents, hopes and dreams are on the move as never before in search of something different, better, safe, exciting and impossible driven by imagined or real opportunities to better their lives. They are traversing into known and unknown places, across established geographic, national, and cultural boundaries, creating new frontiers of hope and promise with an amazing pioneering spirit. The United States of America has been one of their favorite destinations for reasons that we all know and that they have come to believe as the best place for their skills and future or to start a new life. In recent years, we have begun to see this movement of people in many directions, and that reasons for this cross-continental adventures by modern-day pioneers are increasingly multi-dimensional.

This trend and influx is irreversible; this confluence of nations on this blessed land and other Continents are nothing short of providential. We want to make certain that this transition must be a smooth, orderly, and mutually-rewarding experience for cultures, communities, and individuals relocating their hopes and dreams in new lands; willing to face entrenched ideas in place that are unfamiliar and that their receptions that at times may be less sympathetic. These newcomers are equally challenging to the established order and the existing populations; many feel invaded and threatened by new cultures, faiths, traditions, experiences, and sudden expectations and uninvited fierce competition.

Being a leader means: dispelling the fear factor, unfounded stereotype, indifference, or hostility towards newcomers and getting to the task of highlighting the positives of this global phenomenon and its relevance to our community and interests.

STRUGGLE FROM TIMES IMMEMORIAL
Only the times and faces are different. Instead of the primitive hunters, food gatherers, and fierce bartering of survival essentials, we are the modern-day migrating nomads: adventurers, trailblazers, and pioneers carrying not just our survival skills and aggressive instincts but as innovators, creators, distributors, and traders of ideas, products, and services, we represent the present-day humans in search of excelling and a better life.

The concept of independence and interdependence has taken on a new meaning. We know that each of us can do many things well. However, if we distributed the enormous task of human survival, community building, and prosperity to many, our time and energy may be better spent. We are in a millennium of global economies and trade, cultural and educational exchanges; medical, scientific, and technological advancements, global and space travel, and unimagined internet revolution. We need many more minds, skills, new pioneers to keep up with the tasks at-hand and we can anticipate unimagined expansions and growth in many fields. Today, the entire globe, from the remotest island to the farthest hamlet, is our marketplace and the entire world is our talent pool.

As leaders, we need to welcome this sea-change; imagine the power of this challenge.

DIVERSITY AS OUR NEW FRONTIER OF OPPORTUNITY
Diversity is no longer a remote and distant concept; it is a happening and is all around us. Diversity, in all its rich and multi-dimensional facets, is our new frontier of unimagined opportunity and hope. It is an emerging guild of creators and consumers, innovators and ambassadors; tapestry of colorful ethnic and cultural textures; and a textbook of great ideas, knowledge, and human experiences. Diversity is the emerging new face of our shared humanity reflected in our neighborhood, supermarket, place of work, in our public forums and institutions, and increasingly mirrored in those who govern and lead us.

Being a leader means seeing how this new image and the untapped reservoir of talents and dreams fit into the vision of a peaceful and prosperous society; carefully assessing what new and reasonable expectations we must meet to make this diversity work and become a favorable catalyst and foundation for the benefit of all citizens and community.

Being a leader means seeing and anticipating shifts in community momentum, harnessing its positive power to effect creative change, and directing priorities. Transforming our traditional attitudes and ideas and making room for new ideas, preparing our students, citizens, and especially leaders to adapt to a changing world at home and abroad; and initiating policy and legislative considerations where needed to welcome, facilitate and accommodate a responsible mainstreaming for the well-being of all citizens.

As leaders, we need to recognize that the many talents, personal loyalty, and creative involvements and investments of our citizens have the potential of growing many-fold if we do not forget the very basic human component that motivates us and makes us who we are. We must nurture that humanity by learning about it. I am certain before long we can create a bridge that our “village,” the native and newcomer, will cross in friendship with shared enthusiasm. Our embracing: identifying, serving, and celebrating of our rich and growing diversity must be beyond a politically-correct-lip-service, or tokenism.

DISPELLING THE UNIMAGINATIVE, ARCHAIC SUPERIORITY COMPLEX
We need not fear that as a nation, our institutions will suffer or our excellence will be diminished if we made a fair and deserving leadership place for people of diverse cultures, races, or ethnicities at the executive or corporate level, and at every important community table. The race, ethnicity, and culture of our workforce are not, nor should they be a dominant issue. The gifts and competence of our workforce are, and must be, the key element of our focus and concern. Chances are that in our intensely competitive world, American superiority and supremacy in many fields is in danger if we simply continue to dismiss other wisdoms, experiences, and alternate solutions out of hand because of our continuing and unfair bias or shortsightedness.

Science, technology, research, innovations, travel, and internet are in a public domain. Suddenly, each nation has a new pride and confidence to compete at the global level and with superpowers. We are already watching India, China, and other developing nations emerge as big players. Fortunately, many of their brightest and best professionals are here in our midst now and we must tap them for the advantage that they offer us.

Being a leader means reading the wind, tealeaves, and unspoken language; creating an environment where we challenge the best in each of us and deliver it to the person next to us in a true spirit of welcome; an acknowledgement for his/her opportunity to contribute to our common vision and shared purpose. Good leaders make such an attitude a cornerstone of their spirit and commitment. They bring transparency in implementation of such a policy; earn and enjoy the trust of those they serve and lead. Great leaders see the new Diversity Renaissance not as something to fear or as an adversary or adversity, but as something of an anticipated welcome change and challenge; as new anchors and assets to call to service; and as a great new adventure into tomorrow’s world today.

Imagine, for us this is a modest threshold. We need to consider who has arrived and from where? What risks and uncertainties they have already faced? What motivating force they are carrying to succeed? What must we do to make each of us a full partner in building our shared new dreams? Diversity is not just tapestries and textures of color, dress, food, dance, languages, arts, faiths, festivals, unfamiliar traditions, and unexpected surprises. Our diversity is a living, breathing gathering of people, hopes, and dreams daring us to do the right thing. Together we have the power to give it shape and make it a collective adventure. We would not want anything less if we were in their places.

Wonderful Lord:
“Self-Created, Self-Illuminated, Immaculate Reality,”
“Embodiment of all virtues and attributes
That we can imagine
All those we cannot possibly fathom.”
“You are the Father and Mother of all Creation,
We are all Your Children.”
All people, faiths and cultures and communities
Together make
Your beautiful temporal, cultural, and spiritual tapestry;

Almighty King of Kings:
You have commanded us to recognize
“All humanity as One Race, One Brotherhood;”
Revealed and affirmed that as the “Magnificent Master
You have fashioned all beings from the same clay,
Infused the same Divine Light in all Life;
Your Immaculate Order governs; Your dazzling Radiance
Illuminates the unfathomable and the manifest
In every realm, every direction and dimension”

All Life is bursting forth with One Spirit, One Light, Your Love,
Whether we are inside the sanctuaries of faiths
Or outside the sanctuary and embrace no faith;
Your reassuring Canopy of unimagined blessings,
Unbounded Benevolence stretches across all Creation.
Then does it not stand to reason, we too embrace a similar spirit?
No one should be outside the circle of our friendship, understanding,
Nor our thoughtful concern for one another in Your Name?

Everyone is worthy of basic sustenance, freedoms, rights, dignity;
A sense of humanity, community, equal justice, to find their promise;
To have their opportunity for a fair pursuit of their destiny;

With deep humility and thanksgiving,
In a spirit of living our faith in service of others,
As our humble offerings at your Exalted and Majestic Altar,
May we recognize our individual and collective responsibility to our
Extended family across the continents and cultures in Your Name;

Compassionate Lord God of All:
May we be people of faith with a humble, an all-embracing spirit;
Not even inadvertently ignore, trespass against someone else’s dignity,
Nor intrude upon the beliefs, traditions, practices,
Cultural expressions, sensitivities different from our own;
Instead, discover in them wisdom, universal common threads,
Strengths and reflections of our own spirituality and humanity,
Glorifying “Ek Onkaar, Sut Naam: One Immaculate, Eternal Truth.”

Lord, Yahweh, Allah, Ishwar, Pure Being, Waheguru, Great Spirit:
“You are the Fountainhead of all Languages, Wisdom;
Source of all Divine Knowledge, Faiths, and Revelations;”
“Your Power and Command thread all Creation,”
Your Messengers affirm Your Greatness; our many shared spiritual lessons.

As Supreme Architect with a keen eye for every detail:
You have created Nature and all basic elements for Life and living.
All that we see, imagine and experience is Your Creation,
A part of Your Handiwork, Wonder, Majesty, and Manifestation;
May we honor, be good stewards of our life-sustaining blessings,
Your enshrined Magnificence and Mystery in Nature,
Not just for its awesome splendor and natural bounty, but knowing
“You dwell in Nature and Nature forms Your Sacred Crown.”

Your Greatness and Benevolence are beyond our mortal grasp:
You carry awesome burdens of our daily petitions, demands, and expectations.
May we share some burdens of those Lord You place at our crossroads,
With needs, troubles and trials far greater than our own,
May be with profound lessons and message for our lives and spirit.
May we in solidarity, righteous defiance stand to redress serious wrong
Against fellow travelers: tragic sufferings, devastated faith, or broken spirit
Caused by daily conflicts, violence, injustice, indifference, or natural disasters;

As an Act of Gratitude, True Thanksgiving:
May we dwell in the Light and dispel darkness of Spirit through:
Naam Simran: Meditation upon and Remembrance of Your Name;
Seva: Living our Faith in selfless Service, making a difference;
Vand Chhakna: “Giving generously to others from the fruit of our honest labor,”
Knowing, “all gifts for our body, mind, and spirit flow from You, O Lord.”
Safeguard Human Dignity: Rejecting ignorance, unjust treatment,
All forms of outrage against other beings that inhabit our shared universe.
In every act of Love, uplifting of a fallen spirit, know Your Presence;
Witnessing in faith, see Your Holy Face in all, in all our blessings:
Earth, sky, stars, light, snowflakes, birds, flowers, music, life, laughter;

For me, this is the true meaning, festival, and joyous spirit of Thanksgiving
Where everyone is in the front row with four universal basic freedoms:
Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom from Want, Freedom from Fear;*
Let us carry this Light, Hope, Prayer, and Sacred Passion as we go forth from here.

“In Your Name, by Your Grace
May there be Peace and Goodwill among all people everywhere.”

Source of all quotes throughout the prayer reflection:
OUR ARTS, OUR SPIRIT, OUR HUMANITY
Kanwal Prakash “KP” Singh

The great Indian poet, songwriter, singer and musician, actor, artist, philanthropist, humanitarian, and enlightened teacher, Rabindranath Tagore, reminds us that:

“Every child comes with a message that God is not yet despaired of man.”

I take it to mean that here on earth we too must welcome and cherish each life that God has sent to us and help it to grow, prosper, and reach its fullness and potential. The Sikh scriptures remind us that: “God is the Father and Mother of all Creation and we are all God’s Children” and “Every living being is a repository of Divine Light.” Serving others with all gifts entrusted to us by our Creator is a major commandment and honored tradition in the Sikh faith.

The Indian poet offers another universal vision, a deep yearning, and prayer to imagine a place where some basic human and sacred rights are not a dream but a solemn commitment:

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free,
And the world is not broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls.”

Some scholars and admirers see this poem, originally in Bengali, as a universal anthem for all humanity; a fervent hope and prayer for all people, cultures, and nations. It is a lofty dream, but then dreams are supposed to be lofty. Such a place and spirit is well within the realm of possibility in this blessed land. We have to believe, work hard to see that everyone experiences the glow of such freedoms from fear, ignorance, or prejudice. We can say that the American renaissance and promise is gradually expanding and someday we would all be able to affirm:

The unexpected and unimagined is possible here.
Labor and creativity, without distinction, are rewarded;
Great dreams are invented and given amazing shapes everyday.

I offer a few thoughts about arts offering some needed light to our spirit and humanity:

ARTS AS AN ANCHOR AND A LIVING FORCE
Our arts, spirit, and humanity are inextricably intertwined, with each impacting the others in significant ways, drawing strength and inspiration from the others, and giving shape, distinct character and definition to the others. Arts are an adventure, a life-anchor for all generations.

Arts are the audio-visual, sensory, colorful, and creative expressions and reflections of our spirit and humanity. Our arts – song and music, dance and theater, literature and writings, architecture and fine arts, and other elements – culture, history, heritage, foods, festivals, traditions, and celebrations offer an intimate composite portrayal of the human journey.

Arts span many formidable distinct and diverse experiences that enrich and form our societal and cultural perspectives and perceptions, invite us to find common places within our universal hopes and collective visions. Arts reveal many unique and shared thresholds; inspire us to bridge and transcend the unfamiliar; dispel the unfounded and unjust stereotype. The arts help us see life through fresh prisms that reveal new intimate and uncommon connections amidst our diverse origins, history, heritage, cultural spectrums, and hoped-for destinations.

Arts are a window to the human soul. Arts provide a sense of human interests, imagination, dreams, discipline, stirrings, sensitivities, and sensibilities. Arts offer an intimate excursion into the human mind and emotions, our spiritual and cultural journey, and human evolution. The arts transport our spirit into realms that make our temporal experiences a natural extension of that which is beyond our sight and imagination, outside our familiar and imagine realms.

BEAUTY AND LESSONS ENSHRINED IN THE ARTS
There are lessons for our spirit and humanity embedded and reflected in our arts. We create, advocate, and celebrate our world through the arts. We understand the importance of arts in teaching, learning, communicating and stimulating human imagination, and uplifting the human spirit through a myriad of beautiful and magnificent Raagmalas.

Through the arts, we record changing trends and transitions; introduce, transmit, and mold our ideas; create sensual pleasures and objects and icons of deep reverence; connect civilizations and bridge generations; embellish the human universe with fresh creative textures. Throughout human history, more than any other endeavor or pursuit, the arts have unleashed new energy, records and revelations, and great triumphs of imagination to revolutionize human spirit.

ARTS AS A MAJOR ECONOMIC POWER
Besides being a tremendous source of human interest and enrichment, arts represent an economic power that generates millions of jobs and vast marketplaces for exchange. Arts also represent intense search for great innovations, creative excellence, investments, and global outreach.

As an integral part of everything we see, imagine, experience, or encounter, the arts transcend spatial, cultural, and spiritual boundaries; arts are a wonderful resource to motivate, excite, challenge, and transform us in profound ways, and bring us face to face with cultures, creativity vastly different from our own. Arts are a powerful, inspiring friendship force.

THE MASTER WITHIN
There is an artist within each one of us. We need to discover and nurture this inherent faculty, our own unique spirit-force. Arts have the power to bring out the best in us, make us look at life in new ways. That is when arts become a formidable force for change and help direct our energies from ordinary to extraordinary, mundane to memorable, from just a simple interest to developing a liberating passion that enlarges our understanding of life, leads us to its many splendors. Our Great Masters have ushered many a landmark renaissance that proudly embraced the spirit of a generation, or captured an entire civilization in its promise and radiance.

BEYOND THE DAILY MADNESS
In a world heavily invested in maddening confrontations and often at odds with itself at every turn over culture, religion, ethnicity, poverty or prosperity, geography or history, and host of other reasons, the arts offer a pleasant alternative, unifying force, an affirmation, and a spiritual sanctuary. The supreme ability to create, interpret and illuminate, and integrate the arts into our societal fabric has proven to steady our daily pressures, change our world in constructive ways, and enhance the under-served promise of generations and nations.

The arts fascinate us. We know that life is art and arts imitate life. Arts are not the domain of a few; arts are for everyone. Arts are the remarkable creative markers and milestones of the human journey, experiences, and a testimony of man in search of his promise, his true destiny. Today, we see human soul mirrored in our arts and the arts stare back at us in disbelief when we do not honor the timeless lessons and profound wisdoms enshrined in our arts.

POWER TO EMANCIPATE
Arts have the power to emancipate us by awakening our collective moral accountability and responsibility to our time, place, spirit, and each other. We must preserve, invest, and celebrate our treasured arts not as an afterthought but as a major priority and solemn commitment to assure their rightful place and significance to our spirit, especially to our young creative minds.

We must encourage our youth, early and often, to look at their future with a greater sense of urgency and responsibility to themselves and to their communities. We must create programs that are innovative and imaginative and that help harness the strengths and build character of our youth. We must reward the “content of character and not the color of their skin,” ethnicity, cultural traditions, or country of origin. We must keep our eyes on the prize: to create a generation of model world-class citizens. As no other generation before them, our youth will be dealing with an increasingly complex, exceptionally aggressive, competitive world at many levels and in ways beyond their comfort zones. Diversity is our new frontier of opportunity.

MCCOY: A CATALYST FOR POSITIVE CHANGE, OTHER EFFORTS
MCCOY is committed to offering a vision for our youth: to explore creative outlets and productive alternatives that can guide them into safe havens and a bright future. MCCOY works with other major community and service organizations and sponsors to bring opportunities within the reach of youth. Too many of our kids are distracted or being swept away in the avalanche of easily available drugs, joining gangs, and embracing a culture of sex and violence that pose tremendous dangers to themselves and a major menace to society. MCCOY tries to steer our youth into programs that reinforce a greater sense of pride, develop their many assets and skills. We applaud the efforts of MCCOY and others and hope many others will join in recognizing our youth’s enormous untapped potential and helping our youth with programs, activities, facilities, and needed resources for expanded creative involvements.

As they say “great ideas are wonderful, but something must be done about them.” Each of us can assist in this noble endeavor. We are the “village” that must help our youth to succeed and achieve great things. Let us build upon the many initiatives already in place; seek additional resources and reinforce our sometimes shaken trust in future generations. Let us make sure that the new Asian or Hispanic youth is included in our endeavors to help all Hoosier youth, lest the new immigrant may be tempted to slide into similar trends as are out there destroying other youth. Let us teach our youth skills-for-living, how to succeed and excel in the tough global environment, become proud and responsible citizens, tomorrow’s new leaders. Let us not think of this in half-hearted terms. We must resolve to invest in their future in a timely and sustained manner. We have a generation to mentor to lead us forward to unimagined possibilities!

“Let your imagination stretch beyond the fathomable,
Your mind study the wisdom of Ages and cultures,
Your gifts and endeavors shape the moment and the Eternity.
Let your spirit witness the splendor and Majesty in the Divine,
Your heart listen to the universal songs of the Soul,
Your prayers and meditations honor the Sacred in each living being.”

A presentation delivered by K.P. Singh, in celebration of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Indiana Department of Natural Resource (NRCS)

A few thoughts and reflections on this Year’s APA Heritage Celebration Theme:

We have to begin any discussion that concerns people of distinct and diverse ethnicities, cultures, and faiths who today live and work among us and that we may be planning to serve, lead or integrate into our society, community, or nation by fairly accepting and understanding that first and foremost:

PEOPLE ARE A RESOURCE

Representing many visible and untapped opportunities:

Recognize their special assets, talents, strengths, and experiences

Identify their unique concerns, problems, cultural sensitivities

Redress all legitimate grievances at the workplace or in the community

Base all professional promotions, rewards, recognitions on merit, not on ethnicity

Assure a rightful place and encouragement for their ideas, perspectives

Provide equal treatment under the law; fairness under existing or revised policies

Unconditional respect and thoughtful consideration of their culture and spirit

Make room for the unfamiliar traditions, customs, and reasonable expectations

DISCOVERING COMMON THREADS

We must begin with a basic and thoughtful understanding:

Our similar hopes, cherished dreams, universal needs, common humanity

Willingness to learn and teach one another; our collective strengths

Allowing friendly winds of culture to freely flow through our universe – Our neighborhood, classroom, sacred space, and community institutions

Recognizing DIVERSITY as our NEW FRONTIER of OPPORTUNITY

Representing unimagined new assets, resources, talents, and investments

Enriching and innovative ideas, potentials, and experiences

New bridges to people, cultures, market places, and global exchange

A universal key to individual and collective peace and prosperity in our increasingly interconnected and interdependent world

CREATING A WELCOME ENVIRONMENT

We must create an environment:

Where our common humanity is the central and unmistakable thread to our UNITY

A sacred anchor for our UNIVERSALITY as an interdependent human family

A place to seek and offer PEACE and FRIENDSHIP to one another

A space to explore, innovate, discover and surpass the limits of our talents and technology, imagination and opportunities for the greater good of all

DIVERSITY is not, and need not be an ADVERSITY or a threat to our societal and institutional framework, traditions, culture, or heritage. It is an opportunity to connect with diverse branches of our extended family, other unique and distinct cultures that grace the human universe that are now a part of our space and experience.

Beyond the color of my turban, our gender, nationality, faith, culture and ethnic origin,
IT IS THE SAME SPIRIT REVERBERATING THROUGH OUR BODIES, SAME HEARTBEAT THROUGH OUR CHESTS, SAME OR SIMILAR EMOTIONS THAT GOVERN OUR LIVES.

Our UNITY is not a robotic sameness, an unrealistic monolith:

      We are not of one mold, but
We are made of the same clay;
We are not of one design, but
We are designed by One Master with the same basic elements, same DNA;
We are not of one mind, but
We have a mind, heart, and spirit with similar echoes and capacities;
We are not of the same culture or ethnicity, but
Our culture is a result of familiar experiences, elements, and inspirations;
We all do not pursue the same dreams, display same temperaments or responses
and interested in identical things or pursuits, but
We have similar dreams and temperaments; our interests often shaped by geography,
cultural and historical encounters, circumstances, inspirations, and experiences;
We are not the same skin color, build, endowed with the same wisdoms, insights, but
We all want to be loved, respected; be treated with dignity as a basic right, blessing;

Such declarations, understandings, and assurances are the cornerstone and foundation to foster UNITY amidst our growing DIVERSITY:

Where our outward appearance may simply be regarded as a blur but the rich diversity of ideas, talents, pioneering spirit, and energy that we bring to the feast of life to share with others are seen as a real motivating force, tangible assets; our potential and intention

    That best represent the true you and me
That is the true face of my humanity reflected in yours
That is the essence of your radiance shining through mine

With such an enlightened understanding as a commitment, a solemn assurance, you can expect the best from me. I may surprise you with my strong commitment and willing reciprocity. I may excel beyond my own expectations, because I sense that I am a part of the team and that as my leader, mentor, host, friend, neighbor, and fellow American you have placed your trust in me and especially if the trust is deserved and earned, and I am unlikely to disappoint myself or shortchange such generosity. I am going to give the assigned task, my team, my community or institution the best account of my talents and opportunities and hopefully many-folds return of your fair and modest investment in me.

OUR CHANGING CULTURE AND WORLD

Today many diverse celebrations and experiences color and enrich our landscape:

Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, Black History Month, International Festival,
St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Italian and Greek Festivals, American Indian Pow Wows at Eiteljorg Museum, Gyuto Monks at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Sikh Baisakhi, Indian Diwali, Chinese New Year, and countless others events and happenings are all about diverse ethnic and cultural journeys converging in this blessed land. We have brought our hopes and dreams, songs and dances from our native lands to the “New Courtyard of World Civilizations” that is America. This is exciting for us; we must be enthusiastic partners in celebrating our individual cultures and our emerging ethnic and cultural composite, our beautiful “Tapestry of Cultures,” not because it is a politically correct thing to do but because it is the right thing to do. Together we can further strengthen our “One Nation under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All.”

United States of America offers a very farsighted vision, a formidable promise, and each of us has a responsibility and solemn stake to honor this promise. As old and new daring souls, pioneers, innovators, and trailblazers in search of the possible and impossible we have to pick up the banner of generations of Americans before us and fully engage in building “A More Perfect Union” and taking it yet unimagined heights. We must simultaneously pursue our own dreams and answer the call of our own spirit.

As the great Indian Nobel Laureate, poet, educator, musician, songwriter, philanthropist, and humanitarian Rabindra Nath Tagore reminds us that there are “no aliens” in the human race, or among us. The sacred Sikh scripture command us to, “Recognize all humanity as One Race, One Brotherhood” and know that, “Every living being is a repository of Divine Light.” Many sacred texts further elaborate that “No one is outside the Circle of God’s Benevolence and Compassion” and must not be outside our thoughtful consideration and basic respect. The Buddhist sacred text, Meta Sutra reminds us: “One should cherish all life, radiating friendliness; above, below, all around without limit.” Ignorance about our common humanity or continuing to promote unfounded stereotype about other people, cultures, and faiths is a serious roadblock to knowing our collective spirit, promise, and unimagined potential. We are all fellow travelers brought together by destiny and invitation of Lady Liberty. We need to get along; create and provide the environment and framework for us to excel; and discover unity, friendship, love, and light in each other.

It all begins with each one us seeking, celebrating, and encouraging the best in each other. Our ethnic and national origins, cultural textures, and religious associations are a matter of pride, but our real calling card is that we are all Americans, members of one human family. In that spirit, we should respect and celebrate our native and national events, diverse and colorful traditions, other significant and landmark anniversaries. We must understand and embrace the privilege of being in a place where cultures and people from the farthest corners have met to shape a new chapter for human civilization. By taking the time to know other members our team, partners in this endeavor, we may suddenly discover that there are no strangers in the human race, only people we have not made our friends yet. Each has much to contribute to our personal growth, economy, and future. By combing our traditional strengths with those of new pioneers, we have the best chance of undreamed-of achievements and success in critical fields and meeting the challenges of our times. We need to mainstream our attitude towards one another, towards the entire human race, attract the best and brightest to our shores, and harness the untapped and under-utilized wisdoms and experiences of all who come here from distant lands with unfamiliar customs and cultures. The world looks to us for our generosity, spacious skies, and unimagined wealth and we must look to the world for yet untapped resources, talents, and marketplaces where we can make a difference for our fellow man or another nation. We must seek and promote a united front and fight against poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, and global menaces such as HIV/AIDS, terrorism, and violation of basic human rights. We must teach and learn about being a world citizen.

The English poet William Blake reminds us, “Clasp the hands and know the thoughts of men in other lands.” Today, we can see the world is already at our doorsteps. Let us transform this presence, incredible energy, ancient wisdoms, and gifts to solve problems. Let us preserve, honor, and celebrate all spectrums of our cultural and spiritual heritage, our unique and treasured textures, rhythms, and creativity as a vital key, bridge to shared humanity; and find inspirations to strengthen our unity, solidarity as fellow Americans.

We can begin by providing the kind of leadership and optimism that is contagious; that encourages unity amidst diversity; that rewards fairly and excellence over mediocrity; and promotes the best in each of us as people with sights on our collective greatness.

Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month is another reminder of millions of Americans of Asian origin from many Asian countries who are making incredible contributions in many diverse fields to American culture, excellence, and prosperity. It is also a reminder to do all that we must to mainstream and celebrate their presence and assure their rightful place in the American dream. In honoring fellow Americans or any facet of the American spirit and our emerging and colorful cultural festival, we honor ourselves.

Athletes from around the world
Gathered under the Italian skies, sun,
At beautiful sporting arenas,
Warmed with hope, fresh enthusiasm;
Champions with proven talents,
Challengers with unmatched courage,
Tested their skills, luck, fortune,
Competing with the world’s best
At the 2006 Winter Olympic Games
Held at Turin, Italy
A medieval town with sacred sites,
Rich history, culture, architecture,
Nestled in a mountainous region
In the heart of Western civilization.

The Games invited, attracted,
A colorful cheering gallery-
Dignitaries, coaches, sponsors, families;
Media to share notable achievements,
Highlight of Games with the world.

Amazing red-carpet friendliness
Greeted the world-event, visitors;
Fairytale imagination, wonderful
Creativity, breath-taking artistry,
Fire and flames, sparkle and dazzle
Uniquely Italian romance, love of life,
Interwoven with native folk-legends
Treated our senses, welcomed guests,
At the colorful Opening Ceremonies.

There were usual traditional symbols –
Flags, parades, beautiful hosts, festive
Sounds, music, costumes, ice-dancers,
Fireworks lighting stadium skies; Joyful
Laughter transcended language, culture.

There was unusual and intense security
In response to uncertain times
At every venue, throughout the games,
On every slope, in each village lane,
To prevent any untoward incident
That may cause fear or tension,
Dampen the spirit of the Games.
Torino 2006 was a triumph.
Games offered grace and magic,
Inspired artistry, soulful vigor,
In Ice Dancing and Ice Skating;
Intensity, daring, showmanship,
In Snow Boarding, Ski Jumps,
Cross Country, Speed Skating.
Each event tested skills, strength,
Exuded youthful energy, pride,
Vigorous striving for the Gold.

Our universe united in celebration,
Expectation, lessons in sportsmanship;
Games promoting goodwill, friendships,
Sidelining rancor, cultural discords,

The images and unleashed rage of Asian Tsunami
Still send shivers through the spine.
The unimagined devastation tugs our heart,
Loss of life numbs the mind, leaves us speechless.

Many places on the Earth were still in darkness
The world was unaware of the raging onslaught:

The swelled ocean triggered giant tidal waves
Hurtled them across seas and straits, coastlines, settlements
With speed and roar of a jet plane, awesome fury,
Waves knocked everything in their path,
Swallowed up entire islands, fishing villages, shorelines.

Not much survived where the waves struck,
Came ashore, made their violent journey deep inland,
Nor upon the return of monstrous waves back to the sea.
Survivors witnessed in stunned shock, frantic desperation,
In disbelief as they saw the cataclysmic aftermath.

The awesome power of Nature was sight to behold.
Was it the wrath of gods unfolding before our eyes?
The earthquake-triggered Tsunami roared across
From its epicenter in Indonesia past Thailand, India, Sri Lanka,
Westward, to East Africa, an ocean stretch of nearly 5,000 miles.

The houses crumbled, cars, trucks, and large boats
Crushed; trains pushed over; man and material dragged,
Mangled, and scattered across the ravaged landscapes
Scenes of utter devastation hard to imagine possible;

There was rumbling and tumbling, breaking and shaking
Loud screams drowned in deafening noise of powerful Tsunami.
Panic-stricken people swept away helplessly into the deep,
Caught in murky whirlpools of death and destruction;

The force of the invading waves hard to fathom;
Traveling unchecked, marauding coastal towns, fishing villages,
Resorts, as if someone had opened the floodgates of hell,
Let loose the ocean to submerge the earth,
Cause havoc all across the path of merciless Tsunami.

Massive earthquake-Tsunami was Nature displaying
Raw power; unimagined and unseen for generations;
The shattering wake-up call encircled the globe.
Captured in eyewitness and haunting visual images,
Memories, living nightmare that agonize our soul;
Thoughts on future catastrophes before they happen,
Catch us by surprise; devastate our fragile tranquility,
Cause horrendous losses, shattering of lives, heritage,
Natural elements and flourishing human habitat,
Crowd our mind and spirit in repeated aftershocks.

Tsunami laid bare large swaths of land,
Stripped of life, infrastructure, vegetation and soil.
There, now stood heartbreaks, single lonely structures
As the silent reminders of once bustling communities;

Landscape littered with mountain-high debris,
Air filled with sounds of suffering and deep anguish,
Stench of deaths in thousands, agony of despair all around;
Burials and cremations of dead, often by strangers,
Without a final goodbye by those whom they belonged in life;

Unbearable and frantic struggle to save lives; find strength
To carry on after what the victims have been through.

It was not all dark amidst this midnight of sadness.
Noblest human concern, generosity flowed from near and far
To reinforce hope and healing, bring comfort,
Rebuild the shattered world and dreams of survivors.

Unexpected “angels” had descended to lend a hand,
Ease the sorrow and suffering of people, nations
That bore the merciless brunt of the Tsunami.
Millions rushed forward in friendship, solidarity
In prayerful sorrow to share pain in the extended family
In communities, cultures they knew not before the tragedy.

At-work, a powerful spirit, deepest understanding
Across traditional divides and indifferences,
Threading all living beings, for one brief moment,
Into a common humanity, shared cultural tapestry,
Reminding each of our responsibility to other; praying that

The life-sustaining gifts of our shared destiny: hope, promise
Music, song, life, laughter needs to return at ‘daybreak.’
